Blind Dates, Christmas, and Hot Fireman Calendars!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Source: Giveaway Win!

TYPE OF AUSTENESQUE NOVEL: Pride and Prejudice-Inspired, Modern-day Adaptation, Mature Audiences Only

TIME FRAME: Thanksgiving Day 2013 – New Years Eve 2013

MAIN CHARACTERS: Liz Bennet, Charlotte Lucas, Will Darcy, Georgie Darcy, John Lucas, Caroline Bingley, Charlie Bingley, Jane Bennet, Rick Fitzwilliam

One of my dearest friends with impeccable taste in literature was over-the-moon-in-love with this book.

It looked like a book filled with all my most favorite things: A Darcy and Elizabeth romance, Christmas, NYC, blind dates, misadventures, matchmaking, and of course…misunderstandings!

  • A Modern-day Elizabeth and Darcy Original Story: While the formula is basically there and the characters have the same personalities, this story has its own original storyline, which made it full of surprises and not at all predictable! I greatly enjoyed being surrounded by familiar friends, but having no clue where things were heading.
  • Christmas + NYC: NYC has got to be one of the best places in the world to be for Christmas, IMO! I loved visiting all the famous holiday sites such as Rockefeller Plaza, FAO Schwartz, Madison Square Garden, and Central Park! Mr. Bingley and I went to NYC last year for the Christmas season and were hoping to go this year too, but thanks to Ms. Gardiner, I feel like I really was in NYC for Christmas!

REVIEW!! My Kids Led Me Back to P&P

What's more swoon worthy than a Redcoat? Mr Darcy in his fireman's outfit!!!! Intrigued by such an enhancement on Mr Darcy's attributes, I was eager to see him in action. However rather than a detailed account of his heroic acts, the reader gets far more action than they bargained for in the form of Mr Darcy, pin up fireman for the latest charity calendar. Oh yes, tis a sight to behold or (imagine)!

Lucky 13 is a funny, heart warming seasonal JAFF that can be read at any time of the year. I appreciated the fact that it was kept more or less out of the bed room, if you can class Darcy's hip gyrating dance at the fireman's charity auction, in front of an audience of screaming ladies, clean then you'll be fine, although I am not sure Elizabeth was, once it became clear he was dancing just for her!! I believe I heard a certain gentleman once declare " it is a compliment which I never pay to any place if I can avoid it." However it was for charity.
Darcy responded to the pretty girl before him, “What do I look for? Well, besides compassion, intelligence, and kindness, I’m looking for someone who is honest, not only with those around her, but also, more importantly, with herself. Not someone who hides behind a persona, but someone who is comfortable with who she is, and knows what she wants in life. I’m only going to marry once in my life, and I want my wife to be happy. I don’t want to wake up one day to find out she’s miserable with who she became or the life we built together. I want someone real.” - Cat Gardiner
CEO of his father's Tech firm, Will Darcy is a tormented man, guilt ridden for not being there to save his parents from the fire that lead to their deaths, he has joined ladder Company 13 on a part time basis. Of course I had no quibbles with Darcy putting his life on the line to save others, yet the same could not be said of Darcy's aunt Lady Catherine who was seriously displeased with her nephew fraternising with common peasants! Christmas is approaching and as the anniversary of his parents death approaches Darcy has thrown himself into his work, pulling extra shifts whilst virtually living at the firehouse. The Colonel, Richard to you & I in the twenty 21st century is determined to get Darcy out of the perpetual depression which plagues him at this time of year. Resigned to his fate Darcy states "This is Manhattan in the 21St century and a woman worthy of the Darcy name just doesn't exist"

Stop the Presses ... This Just In!

~~Dearest Friends~~
Authored by Pamela Lynne

This variation begins after the Netherfield group leaves post- ball.  It is also where it deviates from canon.  Darcy and Elizabeth meet unexpectedly in London where they are able to reach an understanding much sooner.  Many of the prejudices have been resolved by others before they meet again in the shopping district of London. It is an adventure in order to elope, but can it really be considered an elopement as most of the family is accompanying the couple?

This was by far, one of my favorite regency retellings, the story was great and exceptionally well written.  However, I have to admit I was especially drawn to this variation by the dialogue and actions of the characters.

E & D are true to canon at the end of the original, since they have resolved their issues early.

But, while I LOVE a pleasant, loving ODC, it is the secondary characters that enthralled this reader.

Mr. Bennet is just bad, but you will have to read about that. Jane is not worthy of Elizabeth’s dirty petticoat, she’s a jealous narcissist. Mary is truly a blessing.

Darcy soon learns that, although in trade, the Gardiners are a force to be reckoned with in London society, even Lord Matlock can’t deny their power.

Mostly, I loved the Fitzwilliam/Darcy family.  There is a chapter where Darcy invited Elizabeth and the Gardiners to dinner to meet the extended family that made me laugh until I was crying, seriously!

And, you will never guess who does the Hunsford speech, but I’m not going to tell!  It was a first for me, and it worked so well.

My only complaint is that I could have read so much more of this story, and that a certain couple didn’t end up together.  However, I am sure that if we bug her enough, Pam will compose a part 2, where that will be resolved, and everyone can have their HEA.

This variation should definitely be put on everyone’s TBR list, I give it a rousing thumbs up!  Amazon Link: Dearest Friends

Satisfaction in Completion

Hi Friends!  Is it possible to simultaneously be OVER THE MOON HAPPY about something and absolutely petrified by that same something?  A friend just asked me, "Well, aren't you happy about Lucky 13 coming out on Friday?" Of course my reply was, "I'd be happier if I could just get out of the bathroom from my nerves."  LOL  Yes, I know, this is supposed to be an I'M PUBLISHED post, not an I'M PETRIFIED post!!

Why am I nervous?  Well, for the first time in my life, I have completed something.  Accomplished.  Finished. Produced something from my imagination and hands, seeing it through to the very end for another's enjoyment.  Wow! For me, that's HUGE!  But having done so means putting it out there and the possibility that Darcy hanging shirtless from a fire truck just may not be someone else's cup of tea - even if it is mine (swoon.) Reading about him gyrating and auditioning for an FDNY Beefcake Calendar may not appeal to the masses, even if I'm left speechless and panting.  Images of his hips punctuating to Elvis's "Little Less Conversation" does things to me but maybe not another.  Darcy's total and utter woo-job of Elizabeth may not be satisfactory enough for some readers, but I am left breathless by the kiss he gives her in that romantic carriage ride through Central Park in the snow.  Does this all sound appealing?? Gosh I hope so, 'cause my worry is keeping me in the bathroom. (...makes mad dash ...)

Back now ... What if the reader doesn't enjoy Elizabeth's progression from a cynical, petrified, list-making businesswoman to one who lets her hair down to dance on the street corner with the Salvation Army bell ringers?  There's also that whole scene where Jane has a chocolate meltdown as Caroline's designer dog rebels against his Burberry outfit.  I'm laughing already, and I hope you will, too.  I hope you'll laugh with me - not at me - over the completion of this holiday story where the magic of the season and the synergy of all the characters will leave you believing in love, trust, renewal and the healing power of friendship.

Ah ... I feel better now.  Just thinking about Lucky 13 makes me smile.  It gets my nerves out of the bathroom and takes me to New York City where a Jewish matchmaker makes Christmas wishes come true.  Where snow looks beautiful for a New York minute, and "A Christmas Story" plays at Madison Square Garden next to a Rangers hockey game.  Our story happens in the most magical place on the planet at Christmas where the Rockefeller Center tree lights and people fall in love at first fight sight.  LOL

Thinking of fun characters like Charlotte and Rick and the real 'Charlotte' in my life makes me believe that I can accomplish anything and be proud of who I am, what I've done, and where I am going!  It's not the power of Luck, but the power within, and the power of the good people around you.  :)

Well, I guess I have to put my promotional hat on now and tell you - Hey, I have a new book coming out on Friday, October 31.  Available on Kindle, Nook, iBooks and Kobo, not to mention paperback!

What would a release announcement be without a contest.  Be the first to find and re-post here "The Twelve Days of Christmas" specifically written for Lucky 13 by some of its JAFF readers (it's out there in two places in cyberland) and you will win a free e-book.  Also, one commenter here on my blog will win a special promotional item.  YAY!!! So many goodies: mug, door hanger, tree ornament, Chambord liqueur, or magnet.  Good LUCK!!!  I hope you get Lucky!

"Lucky Christmas/Lucky Hanukkah" ornament

"I feel lucky!" magnet / "I feel lucky today!" mug

"Enter if you feel lucky!" door hanger

Lucky 13 Cover Reveal

Hi Friends!
Well its official!  Publishing on October 31, 2014 the Lucky 13 book cover has revealed.

Whimsical, Chick-Lit and Fun, our Liz graces the cover with her playful spirit as she embarks on her Holiday Dating Blitz. On our back cover we see Darcy, at the ready with his hose! Hot, Hot, Hot!

"Lucky 13" is a fresh and fun Pride and Prejudice contemporary variation. Imagine "You’ve Got Mail" meets "Sex in the City" in a romantic tale where the secondary characters are as lovable as our hero and heroine.

New York City advertising executive, Elizabeth Bennet is determined to find a respectable date to take to Christmas dinner with her insane family. So, what’s a girl to do with only 26 days remaining? She and her best friend embark on a mad-cap dating blitz.

Speed dating and blind dates become a source of frustration when one man continually shows up, hell-bent on either annoying her or capturing her heart. William Darcy, wealthy, hunky, part time New York City firefighter is Elizabeth’s new client, one of thirteen men chosen for a fundraising, beefcake calendar.

Sparks fly and ignite as misunderstandings abound. Sit back and laugh as friends and family play matchmaker, conspiring to bring these two together for one unforgettable, hot, holiday season in New York City."

Lucky 13 will be released for e-Book AND paperback purchase and hopefully we'll be able to offer pre-orders. I'm working on that.  Have fun dancing to Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas" in the book trailer below.

Watch this blog, friends because exciting things will be happening in the following months.  We've already had one winner of a giveaway book and may have another!  Thanks for stopping in..  ~cat
